Rescue Stories

Sampson Sampson is an incredible dog. Sampson is 3 years old and spent the first two years of his life living inside a 20'x20' radio fence. He never had the opportunity to run around nor was he allowed to play with other animals. Unfortunately, he never had the human touch that he craves so much.

When he arrived at Majical Miniatures we shaved him down to his skin taking off multiple layers of matted hair. There were sores on his body and his ears were a mess. While the Great Pyrenees is bred to protect livestock and keep predators from the flocks, Sampson was afraid of the open spaces and could not mingle.

Over time showing lots of love and patience we slowly acquainted him with the goats and some of the other animals. Eventually his instincts surfaced and he assumed the role of guardian and protector and he now loves to run around the property, splash in the pond and enjoy the love and attention that he deserves while doing a job for which he is well suited . Sampson is another friend for whom our place is forever called home.

Tom the Turkey Tom, our white turkey, and his mate were literally left behind when his former owners moved out of town and did not take their "farm animals" with them. We were able to place the chickens in homes and learned too late about the White Turkey breed. The White turkey is only bred to be butchered and grows very large very fast. When these turkeys do grow large their legs cannot hold their weight and those legs often break or their hearts stop because of the strain of supporting such a large body.
Tom is at a point now where his mobility is limited to only a few seconds of movement at a time. The rest of his breed know that his health is compromised and not too long ago I found the others trying to eliminate Tom by pecking him to death when he could not move or get away from them. We moved Tom to a safer location in our front yard with some of the horses and dogs and they all get along very well. We will keep Tom comfortable and safe and he will live out the rest of his life here with us. Our friend Tom the Turkey passed away on Oct. 28, 2007.

Spirit the Horse

Spirit is a 7 year old retired cart racing horse. Spirit broke down on the track several times while racing and was sent to rehabilitation each time until the corporation that owned him decided they were not going to invest additional money in his care and performance. Their intent was to take him to market for $500.

We were contacted by someone who was aware of the situation and we saved him from the proverbial glue factory by offering $501.for him. When he arrived he was thin but not in bad shape. He has filled out of the past year and has learned to love everyone, especially if they are bringing him his food. Spirit's name fits him well as you can see and he has the power and spirit for anything you ask of him.

Jack the Donkey

Jack the Donkey  Jack came to Majical Miniatures with serious problems from eating too much grain at his previous home. He lived for four years on a dairy farm and wandered around every day foraging through the piles of grain whenever he wanted. That resulted in Jack foundering and he was about to be put down.

Once at Majical Miniatures we saw the serious health issues and had him placed in a surgi center for nine weeks and then we proceeded to rehabilitate him for over eight months. Each day we need to perform daily soaking and rubbing and giving him medication for the pain while trying to balance the amount of medication with the knowledge that it could also do serious intestinal damage. We had Jack fitted with special shoes that kept him elevated somewhat in the back to help his digestion problems and we had to be sure they would not damage his ankles more than they were already damaged. He needed shoes every 3-4 weeks for a long while until his conditions stabilized.

Today Jack proudly and painlessly walks around the property and he is shoeless. He does need to wear a drinking muzzle most of the time until his feeding time which is supervised. If you look at Jack you can tell by his eyes what he has been through but you can also see that he understands that he is getting love and care and is happy to be here.

Belle the Deer

Belle the Deer The best anyone can figure out, Belle must have been with her mom when her mom was hit by a speeding car and killed. Belle was found with her jaw torn off and hanging as if her mouth were open all of the time. She was originally rescued by Save our Sea Birds Sanctuary (SOS). There they had a veterinarian perform the necessary surgery to reattach the jaw. Because of the serious damage which created a gap between her teeth and the roots of the teeth in her mouth she will never be rehabilitated and reacquainted in the wild. Belle is not able to tear grass or rip bark off trees. Her diet mainly consists of pellet food and vegetables that she can swallow. Majical Miniatures was asked to take Belle so she could be acquainted with her species living here on the sanctuary.

Sky the Horse

Sky the Horse  We at Majical Miniatures heard about a family that was going to send their 19 year old horse to the "meat packing plant" because he was ill and they could not afford the medical bills. We accepted Sky into the sanctuary after we were told that he had congestive heart failure and would not last too long. We have monitored Sky's food intake trying to build up his strength because he was definitely undernourished and we have found that he probably does not have congestive heart failure but does suffer from narcolepsy. Yes, narcolepsy the sleeping disorder. Often we find that he will just lay down and doze then get up again. We are working on giving him good care and monitoring his feeding to give him additional nourishment and we hope to find him a good home where he will be happy.

Richie the Deer

Richie the Deer Richie was hit by an automobile and his foot was run over and crushed. He was taken to a sanctuary where they amputated the foot that was smashed. Richie was brought to Majical Miniatures to keep him with other deer on the property and we noticed he could not walk very well. This was because the foot was amputated and the rest of the leg left attached that when he walked his back and his hips were being thrown out of alignment because his was trying to use the remainder of the leg as a fourth leg and step down on it. Richie clearly needed to have the leg amputated unfortunately. This was accomplished in the beginning of August and Richie took steps immediately after the operation. Richie has now learned he can run around the sanctuary and move without the previous discomfort he had.
